Since 1978, the total sown area of grain crops in Shanxi Province has remained relatively stable, while the sown area of wheat has decreased from 1.10 million hectares in 1978 to 536,000 hectares in 2023. If a double-cropping system of winter wheat followed by summer millet, summer soybean, summer corn, sorghum, or summer miscellaneous beans could be promoted in central Shanxi, it would not only expand the sown area of grain crops based on the existing arable land but also significantly increase grain output. This would be of great significance for ensuring food security and enhancing the new round of the action for improving the grain production capacity to reach 100 billion jin. The accumulated temperature above 0°C in central Shanxi ranges from 3500°C to 4000°C, providing sufficient heat conditions for crop growth. Meanwhile, the region has abundant surface and groundwater resources and a high mechanization rate, effectively meeting irrigation and mechanized farming needs. Based on these conditions, selecting appropriate crop varieties and adopting suitable farmland management measures make the implementation of a double-cropping system fully feasible in actual production. If the double-cropping system is implemented in central Shanxi, grain production could theoretically increase by at least 900 million kilograms. Moreover, if this system is promoted across the northern winter wheat regions nationwide, production would further increase, which is important for the country's goal of enhancing grain production capacity to 100 billion jin and for maintaining increased income for farmers in Shanxi Province. |
