Abstract:
Based on the remote sensing TM images during the middle of 1980s and the year 2000, the variations of spatial distribution of sand lands in the a djacent areas of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolin were analyzed. The results s howed that total area of sand lands 648 299 hm2 in 2000. During the last 15 y ears, there was 147 671 hm2 of sand lands being transformed into other types of land use, and there was 40 715 hm2 of other lands being transformed in t o sand lands. Therefore, the net decrease of sand lands was 106 956 hm2. Th e most dominant type of land transformation was that between the grasslands an d the sand lands. The paper indicates that anthropologic activities and implementation policies of like reusing sloping fields for plantation or past ure, sand control projects and shelterbelt system construction in "three North " region are the main driving forces for the changes and distribution of sand l ands in the given area.
