Abstract:
As an agricultural province with food self-sufficiency, Gansu province is suffering from water shortage and drought. At the beginning of this century the province will face the pressure caused by population and food requirements which will lead to the increare of water demands. Based on self-sufficiency of food, the demand for agricultural products and water both in high and low water-saving schemes of Gansu province is estimated for forthcoming 30 years. Balance analysis of water demand and supplies shows that the agriculture of Gansu should adopt the way of high efficiency use of water to meet the needs of agricultural water demands. Hence the paper proposes that the development of water-saving and high efficiency agriculture should include the development of water-saving irrigation, the establishment of high efficiency agriculture in rain-fed area and complementary compensation between irrigation agriculture and rain-fed agriculture.
