Abstract:
Drought is a main influencing factor for the development of watermelon industry in gravel-mulched field. In order to enhance the capacity of water preservation and drought resistance, to improve the water condition of plant growth and to promote the production efficiency of watermelon on gravel-mulched field, trails were conducted to examine the effect of different approaches of plastic flm mulching on watermelon in the loess plateau of Northwest China in 2009. The trail comprised four treatments including only gravel-mulched field (CK),half plastic film and gravel-mulched field (HM), full plastic flm and gravel-mulched field (FM), and ridge-forming and plastic film mulching (RM). The results indicated that FM and RM showed better water preservation than others, and the soil water content of FM and RM in- creased by 1.5% and 2% respectively in contrast with HM and CK at the soil depth of 0~40 cm; The water storage of 1m soil layer of FM and RM increased by about 5 mm and 12 mm respectively in contrast with HM and CK. The FM was the best in all treatments for yield and quality of watermelon, and it increased yield and soluble sugar content by 26 % and 10% respectively, which was higher than that of the HM. The WUE for yield and sugar of the FM was also better than others, showing 32% and 45% respectively higher than those of the HM.
