Abstract:
In order to study the impact of medium pH value on the physiological characteristics and the tuberization capability of potato plantlet, the virus-free plantlets of potato cultivars (Sheopdy and Favorita) were transplanted into the vermiculite and were irrigated with MS medium with pH of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 6.5 (control). The result showed that the chlorophyll, nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium content and the SOD activity of the potato leaf, as well as the number of minituber and the average yield per plant of tested cultivars increased with increase of medium pH value, reached maximum at pH 6 and minimum at pH 3. The chlorophyll content and SOD activity of Favorita plantlet with irrigation of MS medium at pH 6.0 were significantly different from control treatment (pH 6.5). The proline content in the leaves of both cultivars declined with the increase of medium pH value. The lowest value was observed at pH 6 and the highest value at pH 3. Thus, it was suggested that the most suitable pH value for the potato plantlets growing in vermiculite was 6.
