Abstract: |
The fruit diameter, cell number and size, and flesh sugar content of two melon cultivars, Yujinxiang and Yindi, were determined to evaluate off season dynamics of melon fruit size and sugar accumulation grown in greenhouses. The results showed that rapid increase of fruit cell number took place in 3 days after blossom(DAB). Cell size increased quickly during 3~14 DAB. The fruit volume increase occurred mainly during 3~21 DAB. The reductive sugar of melon accumulated mainly during 14~28 d DAB(Yujinxiang) and 21~35 d DAB(Yindi). The total sugar in flesh accumu-lated rapidly during2~4 weeks before ripening. The volume of the same variety of fruit had significant correlation with the length and width of cells, but relates not significant to cell number, the main reason for volume’s difference between Yindi and Yujinxiang was the cell number. The increasion of sugar was mainly due to the accumulation of sucrose con-tent, the total sugar of Yujinxiang was much more than Yindi mainly because of the rapid accumulation of sucrose. |
