Abstract:
In this study, the effects of salt stress on root length, bud length, germination index, germination rate, germination energy, vitality index and root\|bud ratio of 80 introduced alfalfa varieties treated with 1.2% NaCl were studied through laboratory germination test. A comprehensive evaluation of the salt tolerance of alfalfa during its germination period was conducted using a combination of principal component analysis, membership function, and cluster analysis. The results showed that salt stress significantly affected the germination energy, germination rate, and germination index of alfalfa (P<0.01), and the coefficient of variation between different varieties ranged from 0.008 to 0.723. The cumulative contribution rate of the two principal components was 73.922%. The germination energy and root\|bud ratio were used as the main salt tolerance indicators for salt tolerance screening during the germination period of alfalfa. The clustering analysis results divided 80 alfalfa varieties into 5 levels, including 9 varieties with strongest salt tolerance, 14 varieties with strong salt tolerance, 43 varieties with moderate salt tolerance, 13 varieties with weak salt tolerance, and 1 variety with the weakest salt tolerance. On this basis, varieties of alfalfa with strong salt tolerance during the germination period were selected as follows: WL168HQ, Tourists, Tianma, Dite, Juneng 801, and Juneng 995.
