Abstract:
To clarify the effectiveness of the average envelope amplitude (AEA) method of ground penetrating radar (GPR) in acquiring soil surface water content in black soil regions and to investigate the impacts of central frequency, soil type, and permittivity models on the accuracy of this method, field experiments were conducted in farmland of black soil regions. Focusing on meadow soil, dark brown soil, and albic soil, two sets of GPR systems with central frequencies of 250 MHz and 500 MHz were employed for soil surface water detection. The results were compared and analyzed with the results obtained using TDR. The results showed that: (1) The ground penetrating radar with a central frequency of 500 MHz demonstrated a superior retrieval accuracy compared to the 250 MHz frequency, with a similar detection depth of approximately 30 cm. (2) The Topp model outperformed the other three models, exhibiting higher accuracy in predicting the spatial distribution of total soil water content, with the lowest RMSE of approximately 0.02 cm3·cm-3. (3) The water content inversion results were generally favorable across all soil types. Among them, the method showed good performance in meadow soil and dark brown soil, followed by albic soil. However, in general, the R2 values were all above 0.88 and RMSE were all less than 0.035 cm3·cm-3. (4) The soil water distribution map constructed using the Ordinary Kriging interpolation grid effectively represented the spatial distribution of soil water at the farmland scale. In summary, the average envelope amplitude method of GPR can be used for rapid and non\|destructive monitoring of soil water distribution in the farmland scale of black soil regions.
